Outside lan users have their voice cut off or not transit at all #45

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. User outside of the lan connects to uMurmur running on the router.
2. User tries to speak.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I have a problem with my umurmur setupg. Whenever my friends join the server,
they can hear me fine, but when they try to talk, they get cut off mid sentence
or their speech does not transit at all. Sometimes the speach resumes when cut
off mid sentence. The mouth icon on Mumble client goes gray as if they are not
pushing the PTT button even if they are.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

uMurmur version 0.2.14 ('Crackpot') protocol version 1.2.4
Router: Linksys WRT160NL
Firmware Version OpenWrt Barrier Breaker r40804
Kernel Version 3.10.36
QoS: No
Firewall rules: OK, users can connect.

Please provide any additional information below.
logread does not give any errors. If I host Murmur from my PC inside the lan,
everything works fine.

Consider also your FW setup to be the culprit.
I have a similiar setup on OpenBSD but did not (yet) faced such issues.

Does your FW maybe drops fragmented packets or stuff like this?

I don't say it aint a Bug but consider this as well because anything
trasmitting Voice is "more" affected then for example http...
Also monitor the connection of your friend. Are there issues with his line
maybe? Frame drops (I do mean Ethernet frames) or so?

These symptoms sound like lost packets, for some reason. Check this:

  * Bandwidth setting in uMurmur. If set lower than your users setting in Mumble then packets will be dropped by uMurmur. Since it is working with regular Murmur I'd consider this first.
  * CPU usage of your router. How many users are connected?
  * Other network related errors.

Thank you for your responses.

I point you two to the part where I state facts that exclude the option of lost
packets from the list of possibilities (or in my opinion at least):
"If I host Murmur from my PC inside the lan, everything works fine."
Yes, behind the same router.

However after flashing a newer OpenWRT version the problem has vanished so I
guess it could be a problem with them or a mysterious bug with umurmur.

Oh well, the problem is solved for me, so we can close this.
