Imagine a planet like Venus: atmosphere dense enough to crush you like a tin can, temperatures hot enough to boil blood, utterly inhospitable to human(oid) life even with a spacesuit and helmet. Planets like these would make it ill-advised to exit your vehicle.
What if the surface had something worth the excursion, however? Rare materials, mission targets, quest locations, whatever carrot on a stick would entice a player to go down and leave their ship. What could protect them in these conditions?
Enter the Mech. A mixture of the environmental protection afforded by a vehicle chassis and the mobility and/or tools provided by being on foot. Potentially able to traverse rough terrain and enter small areas. Weapons and shields to fend off local fauna or pirates. Possibly able to interact with terminals, pickable objects, etc with a "hand" block?
A mech would essentially be the space version of a deep-sea diving suit, compared to a dpacesuit being simple scuba gear: a method to allow humans to exist in very extreme conditions. This could even extend to EVA in entire inhospitable star systems. A strong radiation hazard, solar winds that might fry an astronaut, whatever comes to mind to warrant mech EVA.
