ZoomLink: Zoom Peripheral #3

Open bbleaptrot opened 3 years ago

Website https://bbleaptrot.github.io/zoomlink

Hello Humans,

Our idea is ZoomLink, a Zoom peripheral that will ease the use of all of Zoom's functionalities. Once this first objective is met, we may expand our product's capabilities to work with other online meeting apps--so the name may change as well! We are thinking of using Python for a portion of the programming, and hardware design to create a touchscreen.

Benjamin Leaptrot: USB communication for the touchscreen to computer Luke Majors: Hardware Design, and Software consultation John Michaels: Computer application McKay Mower: Software Development, Python Expert, Touch Screen Programmer

Joining ZoomLink We are looking for: -More Python Developers -USB programmers -Hardware Architect

Contact: Benjamin Leaptrot: bbleaptrot@gmail.com

Potential Customers: Academia is going to be our main customers for this product. Hopefully, the most interest will be from professors, so they can better run their Zoom classrooms. Students would also be able to benefit from having the tools readily available to them for personal Zoom meetings. Businesses are now Zooming for their meetings, and they would also be a potential market to get into.

Potential Financial Costs: Raspberry Pi 7" Touch Screen Display with 10 Finger Capacitive Touch RASPBERRY-PI RASPBERRYPI-DISPLAY $60

TristanStotesbery commented 3 years ago

Group 3 (Tristan Stotesbery, Spencer Durrant, Ben Van hoose): We could see this product being used by educators and businesses who want easier access to zoom features. It seems like implementing a touchscreen will be very challenging, as well as interfacing an external device to the zoom infrastructure. The marketplace for this seems to be schools or businesses that do their work online. If we were a school or business, we could consider buying this for a cheaper price point. We would reccomend trying to make it much cheaper, maybe consider making your own pcbs to cut cost rather than using expensive raspberry pis. Also clarify on exactly what functions could the peripheral do?

Comment from Group 9 (Colton Watson, Seth Jackson, Phelan Hobbs):

What is the practical use? I don't know anyone that likes Zoom. This would help with many of those people. This helps us deal with zoom and its wonderful design decisions.

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Getting access to the Zoom APIs, USB communication.

What is the marketplace for this project? Professors, students, those poor souls destined to use Zoom(tm)

Will we buy it? If I was a professor, I could easily see myself getting this. If it's open source and free to play with, definitely.

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Include the website, not a resume. Also consider integrating with other chat programs (Skype, Discord, Twitter, etc.)

Comment from Group 6 Emmanuel Lotubai, Brandon Chen, Alex Charters:

What is the practical use? Make zoom more intuitive.

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project?

What is the marketplace for this project?

Will we buy it? Yeah. It makes class easier.

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Don't use personal website for project website. Could be made wireless.

- What is the practical use of this project? Video conferencing has become so commonplace now that a peripheral could prove very valuable. - What are the challenges to implement this project? Interfacing with the Zoom software and maintaining/supporting the peripheral with any updates made to Zoom. - What is the marketplace for this project? Anyone who regularly hosts Zoom meetings such as professors and business leaders. - Will we buy it? I don't have any trouble using the standard Zoom tools and I rarely host meetings, so I'm not the target consumer. - What to improve the project from an outsider's perspective: Ideally, the peripheral should support multiple software options such as Discord, Slack, and Skype as well as Zoom.

Best of luck with the project! -VectorU, Scott & Aaron

Jacob Bills & Collin Pollard

-What is the practical use? Simplifying and providing and hardware interface for Zoom

-What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Connecting the Pi to the computer and getting it to work as expected Developing a useful layout that actually simplifies the user experience instead of just adding extra buttons Minimizing cost given the market

-What is the marketplace for this project? Schools and Offices

-Will we buy it? Probably not, just targeting Zoom is too small of an audience. And if everything goes well we won't be using Zoom a lot come fall semester.

-What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Make it more generalized. So maybe the user can create custom buttons or interfaces that run specific scripts or press certain hotkeys that can be designed for programs they use often. Switch to a rasp pi zero to reduce the cost

What is the practical use? Enhance/expand zoom functionality. What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Working with Zoom API. Working with the hardware. The solutions will also need time to be investigated and tested to ensure they will work with the project. What is the marketplace for this project? Students and Professors, Universities, schools, even professionals and companies that use zoom frequently in their business. Will we buy it? I'm honestly happy with the functionality I get out of zoom already. What to improve from an outsider's perspective? This would need to be more affordable if more people are going to get it. Possibly use a cheaper raspberry.

Comment from Group 1 (Benjamin Wadsworth, Dalton Clift, Sam Hirsch):

What is the practical use? This would allow easier management and navigation of the zoom interface and its features.

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Biggest issue would be interfacing with zoom and ensuring that the project does in fact make zoom easier to use and not more confusing.

What is the marketplace for this project? Just about everybody is using zoom these days, this could be a huge hit everywhere.

Will we buy it? Depends on the price, if anything I would consider gifting it to a older family member.

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? I think that like mentioned earlier allowing multiple programs like Teams could increase the desirability and use.

jason-zavala commented 3 years ago

What is the practical use? Extend zoom functionality.

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Interfacing with zoom via hardware.

What is the marketplace for this project? Anyone who uses zoom. Although I will say this is a big market for businesses. At my work we paid like $10k for a similar to device that integrated Skype for business into our conference room.

Will we buy it? No. I dont use zoom enough. Sorry :(

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? You'll need a hard sell to convince the average Joe they need this. I think the key in making this successful will be to really focus on your market.

To Groups 3, Research Folk:

What's wrong with your comment Zoom has a fairly large userbase.

What's right with your comment Our market is mostly comprised of students and educators. Reducing the cost will increase the amount of people who will want to purchase this product, and we will look into cheaper resources to achieve that goal (Looking into Raspberry pi zero).

To Groups 6, 9, Healthbois, 1, VectorU, Jason:

What's wrong with your comment: After seeing many comments, Ben has updated the issue page to display the correct website (Sorry!).

What's right with your comment: Expanding the variety of programs our product can work with will greatly increase and diversify our market of potential buyers.

Group 3's response Is the prototype related? Completely related. Shows possibility to interact with zoom

Is the prototype convincing to invest in? Yes, it shows possibiliy to grow.

MrYo531 commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project?

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest?

YeZhou0226 commented 3 years ago

• Is the prototype related to the project? (with comments) Yes. Raspberry pi part is used to connect hardware and software. • Is the prototype convincing for you to invest? (with comments) Yes.

Interestle commented 3 years ago

Comment from Group 9 (Colton Watson, Seth Jackson, Phelan Hobbs):

Is the prototype related to the project?

Yes, but it is rather simple.

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest?

Not yet, maybe implement another function of the API, and we could be interested.

BradySmith1019 commented 3 years ago

HealthyBois comment:

Is the prototype related to the project? Yes, the prototype seems to be related to the project really well. Good detail.

Will we invest? Probably, depending on if you're able to communicate with the zoom application well.

bcwadsworth commented 3 years ago

Group 1 (Sam Hirsch, Dalton Clift, and Benjamin Wadsworth)

Is the prototype related to the project? Yes, it appears to be very close to the entire project. Continuing on to the remaining actions appears to be trivial.

Will we invest? No. We are concerned about the longevity of the demand for the device. Without further integration with other platforms or an extremely fleshed out system, we would be hesitant to invest.

altonbill commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project?

Yes, after getting that functionality it seems like there wouldn't be much left to do

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest? No, at this point I don't know if there would be is enough value presented for users to purchase the product.

alexCharters commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project?

Is the prototype convincing for us to invest?

ColinPollard commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project? It is.

Is the prototype convincing for us to invest? As a beginning demonstration of functionality, it would boost confidence.

ScotthewUT commented 3 years ago

VectorU comment:

Is the prototype related to the project? Yes, could use a little more information though.

Is the prototype convincing for us to invest? Any proof-of-concept demonstration would increase our confidence to invest.
