alexCharters commented 3 years ago

Hello guys,

Our team, Holofan, seeks to display 3D objects in a way that is natural and intuitive. Details are summarized below:

Project Objective: We will use the concept of persistence of vision to create an image with a high-speed fan. The fan will track where the user is looking from and update the angle it is facing as well as the displayed image so that a 3D hologram is shown. This could be used for advertising, decoration, or as an alternative for VR. Once a static object can successfully be displayed, the project could be extended to 3D animations.

Comment from Group 9 (Colton Watson, Seth Jackson, Phelan Hobbs):

What is the practical use? Create a really cool 3D image, toy.

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Keeping motors steady is a pain, especially with movement. Tracking eye movement.

What is the marketplace for this project? Toys, show off cool stuff they own. A fancy lava lamp enthusiast. People who like RGB LEDs in their computers.

Will we buy it? I would buy if I can afford it. Yes.

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? This could be really difficult. Stability and cost effectiveness look challenging.

Comment from Group 5 (John, Luke, McKay, Benjamin): --Practical Use This could potentially be used to provide to-scale models for prototyping projects. Advertising is another great use for this product. --Challenges -Persistence of vision, how will it accurately track user's eye movements -Preventing damage to unit, the fan setup will need a good design to ensure expensive parts are not damaged during use --Marketplace The education sector would be a great marketplace for this. Showing cool math functions, chemical structures and other STEM related visuals. The entertainment marketplace is also a great place for this product if it can be implemented with the VR technology. Once covid has ended, production companies would purchase this product for company events and conferences to help said companies display cool products. --Purchase? For the current estimated price to produce, more than likely the price it is being sold for will make it out of our budget to own. --Improvements -Cost: If the cost could be brought down, there would be more people interested in getting this product. -Sizing: If this product could come in an array of sizes, this could lead to more affordable prices as well as more usable applications.

Group 3 (Tristan Stotesbery, Spencer Durrant, Ben Van hoose): This project could be used in advertising, decoration, entertainment. It appears there would be some challenges in having the correct angle displayed for the 3D image, as well as having the fans rotating at a safe speed. Computer Vision will have to be fast and accurate in order to make the hologram look good. The marketplace for this project seems to be people who like cool technology and can afford to get this as a decoration, as well as entertainment purposes. We would buy it if it could be made cheaper and be proven to work efficiently. We would work on making the product cheaper as a way to improve.

- What is the practical use of this project? Novelty & Advertising - What are the challenges to implement this project? The eye-tracking tech may be difficult to implement. How will it deal with more than one user? - What is the marketplace for this project? Seems like something you'd find in the SkyMall catalog. Vendors at trade shows and conventions could use it to grab attention. - Will we buy it? It's a bit too niche for my needs. - What to improve the project from an outsider's perspective: Could the 3D effect be done with multiple fans or some other physical element instead of using stereoscopy that is relative to a single user?

Looking forward to what you come up with! -VectorU, Scott & Aaron

Jacob Bills & Collin Pollard

-What is the practical use? Displaying information/graphics on a rotating display

-What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Getting all of the hardware and software timings inline Finding an appropriate market for the idea

-What is the marketplace for this project? Probably hobbyists or Businesses

-Will we buy it? Most likely not at the current price point. The cost-benefit really isn't there to justify it

-What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Reduce the price and maybe pivot towards coding education. ie this is something schools or organizations can purchase to teach kids how to code by controlling it through something like a driver for an Arduino or Rasp pi.

What is the practical use? 3D Hologram, seems really cool. Maybe researchers could also use this? What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? The math and software involved to make this happen. I don't even know how holograms work. What is the marketplace for this project? Anyone interested in this kind of technology. Will we buy it? 100%. Gonna hologram my in game skins What to improve from an outsider's perspective? How much is all of this gonna cost? Might be pretty expensive. Dope project.

(Josh, Salwa, Mohammed, and Todd)

Is it practical?

Some of our team members are confused about how the project is supposed to function.

What are the challenges?

Eye-tracking. How is the device determine which user is looking at it if multiple users are in the room?

What is the marketplace?

Hobbyists (with some extra cash)

Will we buy the project?

No for the current time. Because of the limited features it offers compared to traditional VR competitors.

What are our suggestions?

You need to provide more details on the project. You are missing essential details for the customer. I am not sure how it is supposed to work. Could you please expand on the technology being used?

bcwadsworth commented 3 years ago

Comment from Group 1 (Benjamin Wadsworth, Dalton Clift, Sam Hirsch): What is the practical use? This seems to be very useful for tradeshows, museums, and many other settings! Anywhere with a 3d need in physical space!

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? Our main concern is the slip ring as stated on the project website. Making sure to find a good one will be key. Also, there seems to be a LOT of software that needs to be developed, and a lot of it seems to be complicated vision/graphics sort of software. Interfacing all the parts might become a real problem towards the end.

What is the marketplace for this project? A lot of commercial customers would love this sort of thing to show off their products.

Will we buy it? It seems like it would be expensive, but if we could afford it, yes!

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Clarification of interfacing between the different parts would be good. Also, it looks like you left off a camera or other interface for computer vison off of your list of parts.

jason-zavala commented 3 years ago

What is the practical use? Maybe decorations and in house stuff? Like I could do a picture but as a hologram?

What are the challenges we think of to implement this project? This seems like a very technical project with a lot of math.

What is the marketplace for this project? Anyone interested in this kind of technology.

Will we buy it? Definitely! Seems really interesting!

What to improve from an outsider's perspective? Try to make it affordable!

Group 3's response Is the prototype related? Yes, it's a good prototype with a clear proof of concept on the difficult aspects.

Is the prototype convincing to invest in? Yes, but would not invest in the frame construction, seems unnecessary for the prototype

YeZhou0226 commented 3 years ago

• Is the prototype related to the project? (with comments) Yes. It seem pretty clear that you have thoroughly planned this out. It looks really interesting. • Is the prototype convincing for you to invest? (with comments) Yes. I would definitely be willing to invest!

BradySmith1019 commented 3 years ago

HealthyBois comment:

Is the prototype related to the project? The prototype looks to be designed really well. A lot of detail and well-thought out steps.

Will we invest? Depending on if it is completed on time, we would invest.

MrYo531 commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project?

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest?

Interestle commented 3 years ago

Comment from Group 9 (Colton Watson, Seth Jackson, Phelan Hobbs):

Is the prototype related to the project?

It’s most likely related.

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest?

If many of those ideas are met, we could see ourselves investing in this.

altonbill commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project?

It's good proof that you could implement the basic tracking systems for the project

Is the prototype convincing for you to invest? No, I am still don't see the market value of this product regardless of any prototypes

ColinPollard commented 3 years ago

Is the prototype related to the project? Definitely, it would cover most of the tough challenges. Perhaps a little over the top for a prototype, but would be awesome if pulled off.

Is the prototype convincing for us to invest? The prototype helps, but ultimately I'm not sure of the market potential.

Sam3077 commented 3 years ago

Group 1 (Sam Hirsch, Dalton Clift, and Benjamin Wadsworth)

Is the prototype related to the project? Yes, this is a good demonstration of the new technology that you're proposing.

Will we invest? Yes! If this demonstration is fully working I think this project will be very interesting and viable.

bbleaptrot commented 3 years ago

Comments from Team 5 (Luke, Benjamin, John, Mckay): -Is this prototype related to the project?

Yes! This prototype is tracking user eye movement and will display the desired image.

-Is the prototype convincing us to buy?

Yes! This would be great for displaying cool art in the house, or advertising a product at a convention

mfateh93 commented 3 years ago

Team 8 (Salwa, Joshua, Todd, Mohammed): -Is this prototype related to the project? Yes. You did an amazing job stating what you will be working on and how the components are interacting together. I know you have displayed a state diagram, but it would be nice to see a description on what will be presented for the prototype (i.e. what can it do by that time)

-Is the prototype convincing us to buy? Yes and no. It is a good product, might be a bit expensive down the road, but waiting on the prototype to make a commitment.

ScotthewUT commented 3 years ago

VectorU comment:

Is the prototype related to the project? Yes, the website has very solid information about the goals of the prototype and how it relates to the project. It's clear what you want to achieve. If anything, it might be overly ambitious for the time remaining.

Is the prototype convincing for us to invest? Yes! If the eye tracking works reasonably well for an early prototype, that would be a great head start.
