Thanks for the request; I'm sorry that I forgot about this for quite a long time... Indeed there isn't much in the code that I can use, but I'll create an issue about this and close this pull request. Also note that you can use --vice-opt-default-quality
to set the default quality on command line (but this of course will affect all client browsers, not just one).
Not sure if you actually want to merge this, but figured I'd give you the option.
I've found that on my Pentium II 400 machine using Internet Explorer 5, browsing works great, but is much more responsive with something like a 90 quality setting instead of PNG. Instead of setting it manually every time I open a window, I use this change to set it for me.
