A fancier rendering for stars is 100% planned, just need the time to do it, like everything else.
A lot of the stuff in SMT is just groundwork for a larger system that could be utilized by some of your suggestions.
I do definitely like these suggestions, so I'll leave them here for when I have the hankering to write some mad science code ;)
To expand upon the "lack of containment" mechanic...
Pulling too much power out of a barely contained star should cause it to begin supernova/collapse prematurely; the rate of power draw could be limited by the harvester block and the containment amount, allowing you to set (say) an average and peak allowance of power so that it can do it's thing. Failure to draw enough power out could also lead to containment failure as the excess builds up.
Drawing the power from a star should be both epic in scale and danger. Mess it up, and you're in a lot of trouble...
Love the idea of your mod, but the implementation seems a little less epic than harvesting a star for your own ends would imply...
Was talking with a guy at work, and we have some ideas if you're interested...
Stars render bigger, and bigger stars should be harder to contain+harvest; as well as be physically larger in the game.
The harvesting setup could be a multiblock akin to a hybrid of the Draconic Evolution energy storage and the Thaumcraft infusion altar. The star heart/storage block gets placed in the middle, and layers of shielding/containment placed outside it - larger and/or more powerful stars need more shielding (which conveniently makes the multiblock larger). Not having enough shielding (or running out of power for the shielding) leads to a containment breach... a bad thing! The more shielding you have, the less power you can get out (as a percentage) so it's less efficient. That 2.1 billion RF supergiant might only return 60% of it's power if you have it absolutely stable, but more if you cut the shielding back and have an area-wide debuff (wither+fire with minimal shielding but 99% return, for example.)
Around the outside could be pillars which focus the containment; they'd look like the infusion altar pillars but bending outwards slightly (gravity distorts them?). The bigger stars need taller pillars, obviously. In the middle, but below the star could be the "igniter"; this block is the one that starts the reaction off and needs a certain amount of power to begin. Above it could be the "harvester" block, which draws power from the star through a tiny breach in containment and converts it to RF.
I'm not entirely sure what you have planned for your mod, but I thought these ideas could be a good basis if you needed inspiration for further design. If you'd like diagrams/etc or just further clarification, let me know as well. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the mod!
