Maximum recursion with VADs #449

Could it be that the VAD node points back to itself, so it'll forever descend 
down the branch?  It's odd that it's firing off the InvalidOffset exception at 
the end of a left branch after all those right branches.  My guess is that left 
is always invalid, and gets caught, and right is valid but points back on 
itself...

I've since lost the memory image that produced this error, and while that is no 
justification for closing an issue, until we can reproduce it, there's not too 
much we can do in terms of trying to fix it. I'm sure it will turn up again in 
the future and when that happens, we'll reopen.
