Text formatting disappear after sync #81

I am currently having this same issue: https://github.com/ttscoff/nv/issues/35

But that issue wasn't tagged with 2.2 beta, so I made a new issue.

Everything I bold or italicize becomes plain text after sync. It only seemed to start happening in the past few weeks. I have notes that haven't been edited since before it started and they still have all their formatting. But if I go in and start editing them (even if I don't mess with bolding or italicizing) they will lose all that formatting with the next sync.

The only thing I can think of that might cause this is that I moved my Notational Data folder to a new location. But I can't pin down exactly when it started happening because I don't always bold/italicize things. Plus, it took me a while to realize it was actually happening and that I wasn't losing my mind. :)

Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74), 13-inch Mid 2010, Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Version 2.2b (94), notes stored as separate files, formatted HTML Documents, no encryption.

EDIT: It may also be worth mentioning that I use nvALT on two computers; one at work and one at home. They both sync to Simplenote. The other computer's stats aren't available at the moment, but I can add them later.

Syncing via Simplenote?

mattfredfry commented 12 years ago

Yes. Sorry, I should've included that.

anatomatic commented 12 years ago

I'm pretty sure Simplenote is the culprit. Simplenote stores notes as Plain Text (.txt), which doesn't include formatting. If bold/italics matter to you, your options are:

I recommend the former. I got into Markdown because of NVAlt / Simplenote, and haven't looked back.

firedev commented 12 years ago

Regarding markdown, frankly I was expecting notes being saved in markdown internally so they can be synced through Simplenote without losing formatting. Is there any way to see formatted text and have markdown in the sync data?

mattfredfry commented 12 years ago

I agree with firedev. It would be awesome to have an option that would automatically translate markdown to formatted text and vice versa, then let me choose which one I see while editing.

firedev commented 12 years ago

To be honest when I was downloading NValt I was sure it does that out of the box – stores notes in markdown while displaying them in rich text and that this was the main difference from the main NV fork - seamless markdown support.

ttscoff commented 12 years ago

That's not really an option, given Markdown doesn't cover the full range of rich text formats. That's what the preview is for, folks.

mattfredfry commented 12 years ago

Personally, I just use nvAlt for writing copy and taking notes, so I never use preview and writing in Markdown isn't really ideal. So do you have any ideas about what's happening with the formatting on sync? Do I need to switch to a different syncing option?

firedev commented 12 years ago

Sorry but we don't need the full range of text format, I for instance just need bold. Markdown covers this just fine. But it should be synced to another computer, on the iPhone in Simplenote it can be bold, no problem.

So actually the question is - is it possible to store notes in Markdown but display/edit them like it's rich text?

ttscoff commented 12 years ago

Probably, but it's outside of the scope of anything I intend for nvALT.

mattfredfry commented 12 years ago

I don't know if this is related to my original question or if it's a separate bug, but I've been getting this alert from time to time latelty: what does it mean? Any ideas why it can't find the Note-Changes file? Does this have any bearing on why I used to be able to save formatting with sync but now I can't?

ttscoff commented 12 years ago

The above error shouldn't have anything to do with that (note formatting issues appear to be related to recent changes in Simplenote). Are you running Notational Velocity or any other copy of nvALT on the same machine? It can happen across Dropbox-connected folders as well, but it's less common.
