Data portal maps display coordinates of occurrence records.
In most cases,
these reflect where the organism was observed / collected in the wild.
In some cases, like zoo animals, sound recordings in captivity etc.,
however, this leads to strange distribution patterns. Two things are required:
1) portal logic: either display different basis of record types with
different graphics, or allow filters to be set to exclude certain types
from map display (on the species pages - already possible on occurrences?),
with a default to exclude living collections. This still needs some
discussion/clarification in the treatment of botanical vs. zoological
living collections: while botanical collections often give the wild origin
(fitting well into distribution patterns), zoological gardens often give
breeding origins, which are confusing in the context
2) Data side: basis of record is not always supplied, and if so, is often
misapplied. This needs (a) a clear guideline of which values to supply for
which cases, and (b) following up with individual providers to suggest
suitable changes.
