Some organisms are routinely used in greenhouses and similar. Even though
growers may claim that they can not exit the colonies, there are obviously
exceptions. Much more detailed studies would be needed to determine if
escaped organisms become established in. However, this raises the question
as to how best to map records of animals that are feral, escaped, or
otherwise don't belong to populations that are definitely established,
free-living, and self-sustaining, i.e. that are not fully "wild". They
should best be annotated so they do not obscure the established distribution.
In the short term, need a way to flag such record as, e.g., "potential escapes
from commercial greenhouses" and in the long run mapping tools need the means
to clearly distinguish between individuals belonging to established populations
and those that do not.
