Conditional display of Occurrence Maps #52

Which section of the data portal this requests refers to?

Species summary pages.

Could you describe in detail the suggested enhancement?

Species summary pages show an occurrence map that, in some cases, includes
summarized occurrence information as
density squares. The GBIF Nub taxonomy is based on the Catalogue of Life
annual checklist which provides a list of
over 1M species. Evaluation of the occurrence data indicates that a minor
proportion of these species contain
occurrence data. The result is that the majority of species summary pages
display a map with no points.

My recommendation is that a species summary page not include such a blank map
but rather display an alternative
indicator that uses less space and does not appear to indicate a deficiency in
coverage.

In addition, it would be beneficial to indicate the status of a taxon having
occurrence data available earlier in the search
process (ie., before a user gets to the species summary). In other words,
following a search for taxa or via browsing,
consider some sort of indicator of occurrence of occurrences.

Could you provide us with an URL of the page that should include the
enhancement?

Any other comments?

If a species does not have any georeferenced records associated, a message like

"No georeferenced records currently available for SPECIES_NAME" now is shown
instead of the empty map.

If the species has georeferenced records associated, the map is displayed just
as before.

No map --> http://kiwaia.gbif.org:8080/portal/species/14443939/
Map --> http://kiwaia.gbif.org:8080/portal/species/13815711/

(vpn access only)

Still to be done:

"In addition, it would be beneficial to indicate the status of a taxon having
occurrence data available earlier in
the search process (ie., before a user gets to the species summary). In other
words, following a search for
taxa or via browsing, consider some sort of indicator of occurrence of
occurrences."

The indicator is now implemented for species and subspecies in r129 on
CIAT-branch.

The implementation could be easily changed to work with other taxonomies. The
performance is apparently not a problem.
