Together with a data download (e.g. starting from
http://data.gbif.org/occurrences/downloadSpreadsheet.htm?c[0].s=20&c[0].p=0&c[0]
.o=13808252), a text document called "citation.txt" is provided that contains
the citation for all data sources to be used when publishing. Apart from the
added parentheses, this citation needs to be identical to the one found on the
individual dataset web pages when browsing the portal. Currently, it uses the
dataset name, does not name the publisher, and does not include a date. The web
page format, on the other hand, a) evaluates whether a citation is supplied by
the publisher (if so, use it; if not, construct citation from publisher and
dataset name), and b) adds the current date as the date accessed.
Example 1: the publisher provided their own citation text ->
current citation in text file (missing institution name and date):
(accessed through GBIF data portal, Vertebrate specimens,
http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/541)
citation on web page (link included above):
MSU Vertebrate Collection (accessed through GBIF data portal,
http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/541, 2010-11-04)
Example 2: the publisher did not provider a citation; auto-generated ->
current citation in text file:
(accessed through GBIF data portal, Lund Museum of Zoology (MZLU),
http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/1533)
citation on web page (link included above):
GBIF-Sweden, Lund Museum of Zoology (MZLU) (accessed through GBIF data portal,
http://data.gbif.org/datasets/resource/1533, 2010-11-04)
Please note that the citation format might change in future, but that we will
want to keep the display on the web page and in the citation.txt download
synchronised.
