"author-maintained" means the work can never been taken over by others, i.e. the LPPL maintenance clause does not apply. Meant for people who feel like their work should set in stone if they drop form earth or loose interest.
We therefore strongly recomment "maintained". You still have full control as long as you want, but it avoids (as it happen too often) that good stuff gets obsolete without anybody being able to take over.
