8 years ago I did a test build with unencrypted content, and it took almost exactly the same amount of time to load, which is good news inasmuch as it means it isn't the encryption that's the problem.
Other possible remedies:
- Decrease image size
- Don't load the whole section at once (separate file for each subsection?)
- Load the whole section, but only paginate the next X pages
- Other things?
Loading section 2 of the CSE book on my Droid Turbo (a much higher-end device than many in the target userbase, I think) takes over a minute to display. :( Section one does not fare much better.
It's possible that this is due to the decryption process, but the short preface (unencrypted) and frontmatter (encrypted) sections both load quickly, so it could just be the size of the HTML (which remember has image data embedded in it, in addition to encryption.
Either way, this is a showstopping bug we need to deal with asap.
