@ is hijacked and turned into a $blahblah. UP/DOWN keys don't work. pressing @ sign again crashed witty

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install 2.1
2. Connect to twitter
3. Press @
4. @ turns into $blahblah 
5. Up/Down keys do nothing 
6. Press @ again and error message comes up.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
This happens on my computer at work. (Windows 7)
my netbook (Windows XP)
and my laptop (Windows 7)

all with the latest 2.1.0 install

Please provide any additional information below.
