run the server in debug mode (PRemoteDroid-Server-debug.exe)
no error message ?

I tried that without success. By looking further, I found out that the Desire
was
using a crappy Bluetooth stack and therefore was not supporting SPP correctly. I
believe this must the profile you use.
Though I had a try at Remote Droid and it work OK (except for the app to crash
often)
so it must be possible to make it work.

There seems to be a problem on the bluetooth stack of the Android 2.1 version
from
HTC (with senseUI). They use a different stack which has problems with SPP
(Serial
Port Protocol)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Port_Profile#Serial_Port_Profile_.28SPP.29
Here are a few links that illustrate the problem:

I have submitted a ticket to HTC. After a few email exchanges they agreed to
submit a
issue to their development team but I doubt this will be high priority,. I
encourage
anyone having the problem to contact HTC. When we will be 1,000 they might do
something about it.

Nope. Nothing yet. My ticket is still open at HTC customer service. I can only
encourage you to request a support ticket on that issue. It will tell HTC that
many users are impacted.

kristian.linde, If you have connection refused with WiFi, it is more that
likely that you are having another problem or a wrong config. This issue is
only due to a feature gap in the Bluetooth stack of HTC SenseUI for Android 2.1

Same here, htc desire 2.1 connection refused.
Sounds like the htc issue is only related to bluetooth spp, can it be changed
to hid or implemented some other way ?

I can pair HTC desire standard 2.1 with my MAC OSX 10.5.8 but can not connect,
not at all. Can't browse the device and can't send anything from the phone to
the mac. It just fails each time.

In my own case, rebooting the phone seems to allow Bluetooth connection to
succeed.
I was having the "Connection refused" problem when using Bluetooth on my HTC
EVO 3D, immediately after installing PRemoteDroid. With debugging enabled on
both server and phone, no informative error messages were produced. I rebooted
the phone, and when I restarted PRemoteDroid, it happily connected via
Blutooth. I am typing this sentence via a bt connection.
