BSCC Life Sciences Programme: Should you trust digital healthcare?

Date: Wednesday 19 April 2023, 18:00 - 21:00

The digital aspects of the future of the healthcare system is of significant importance. The prospect of coupling the tools and technologies of today with high quality data to improve patient outcomes is tantalising. We expect it to help unlock treatments for many common and rare diseases at a pace the world has never seen before. The prospect of curing previously incurable diseases can seem a given, but at what cost?

We know that cyber security poses risks and challenges across all industries. The Cambridge Analytica scandal reminded us recently of how our data can be misused or even abused, and reaffirmed that “Knowledge is Power”. Any organisation being in control of, or having access to, so much data undoubtedly has concerns.

To discuss these issues, the BSCC Basel Chapter brings together experts in their field for an Oxford-style debate. We ask our special guests to share their research, insights and cautions when it comes to digital healthcare and centre the debate around the issues of data and trust.

This event will challenge you to think differently and leave you feeling empowered.

HDR UK: HDR UK Big Data for Complex Disease Driver Programme call for PhD project proposals

Deadline: Friday 28 April 2023, 17:00

Health Data Research UK’s Big Data for Complex Disease (BDCD) Driver Programme is calling for potential host organisations to put forward project proposals for up to five PhD studentships. This is an exciting opportunity to apply the potential of large-scale data to addressing some of the most pressing challenges in contemporary healthcare.

The BDCD Driver Programme is designed to address three core challenges that focus on deploying whole population, national linked health data:

• To better predict development of cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to stratify risk for better early detection, early diagnosis and prevention.

• To improve understanding of the inter–relationship between these complex diseases to ensure that data–driven insights fully inform strategies for the prevention, early diagnosis and management of both treatment sequelae and long–term risk.

• To examine and better understand the impact of inequalities to influence and mitigate the negative impacts on incidence and outcomes associated with age, gender, ethnicity, geography and deprivation.

The programme is led by Professor Cathie Sudlow (HDR UK) and Professor Mark Lawler (Queen’s University Belfast, HDR UK Northern Ireland), with a wider leadership team from across the UK.
