It’s time to announce the speaker for our next event in February! Malcolm Barrett will be talking about very exciting new features in his ggdag R package — don’t miss it! See full details below. TITLE: Causal Diagrams in R with ggdag: New tools for better DAGs SPEAKER: Malcolm Barrett (Stanford University) DATE/TIME: Monday 5th Feb, 15.00-16.00 GMT LOCATION: Zoom REGISTER HERE: https://turing-uk.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEocu6vqzstG9Dh5Y_pFI2H3DOC8-1U0set ABSTRACT: Causal diagrams are a key tool in visualizing and understanding causal assumptions. ggdag joins the powerful algorithms of the dagitty R package with the beautiful visualizations of ggplot2. When I developed ggdag in 2017, I was focused on making decent-looking, analyzable DAGs quickly. This is great for prototyping but not for communication or even supporting your own process of thinking through DAGs. Mesmerized by the mathematics of DAGs, I was less focused on the practical side of DAG development. Now, despite being my oldest R package, ggdag is going through a renaissance as I’ve learned more about what’s actually hard about making DAGs. I’ll talk about new tools in ggdag, like automatic time-ordering, creating and pruning fully saturated DAGs, easier customization, and better support for DAG-data consistency checks. SPEAKER BIO: Malcolm Barrett is an epidemiologist and research software engineer at Stanford University. After receiving his Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Southern California, he worked as a data scientist at Apple and Posit. His work has focused on causal inference methodology and software development, including many R packages for causal inference. Collectively, open-source tools he has authored have millions of downloads. Malcolm also teaches workshops and courses in R, software development, and causal inference.

Calling all health and allied professionals using cancer risk prediction tools - the Cancer Data Driven Detection (CD3) initiative needs your views! CD3 is a proposed new, national research initiative dedicated to using data to revolutionise our understanding of cancer risk and to allow early interception of cancers. CRUK are leading the project with support from Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), The Alan Turing Institute, the Economic and Social Research Council’s Administrative Data Research UK programme (ADR UK), and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), with involvement of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The ambition is to bring expertise in cancer risk, epidemiology, multi-omics, early detection, prevention, health informatics and data science together with insights from clinicians, patients and the wider public to enhance the UK’s ability to prevent, detect and diagnose cancer early. 10 min survey: https://www.thiscovery.org/project/share-your-views-on-the-clinical-priorities-for-cancer-risk-prediction This consultation aims to generate insights into how improvements in cancer risk prediction should be targeted to ensure most benefit to routine clinical practice.
