New episode: In the report ‘Better, Broader, Safer’ for the UK govt., Ben Goldacre outlines ways on how research in the health sector should be improved. It has a set of wide-ranging suggestions. Software engineering and supporting RSEs feature big in this, as Ben explains in this week’s #CodeForThought episode: https://tinyurl.com/9huzue8e

Overview: This course is part of the Health Data Research UK Doctoral Immersion Week Programme. The aim of this training is to cover the basic principles of fairness in healthcare modelling and highlight aspects of fairness that Health Data Scientists need to be aware of in their own research.
Intended Learning Outcomes: Participants will understand how bias can manifest itself in the different stages of predictive modelling in healthcare. Participants will understand the implications of biased samples, especially in the context of health data science such as genetic data or underreported medical conditions. Participants will have a broad understanding of how to evaluate algorithmic fairness within a given predictive model. Pre-requisites:
Participants should be: Current PhD students at a UK university, Experienced in graduate-level studies in mathematics, statistics and computational science, Proficient in a modern programming language (particularly Python and/or R). The first International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science will take place on Tuesday 11 October. The initiative stems from a joint collaboration between the Caucus for Women in Statistics and the Portuguese Statistical Society. This will be a virtual event in the spirit of the first Around the World conference, which means there will be a place for both live and recorded presentations.
