Description

This ticket creates a lesson/activity for Mod 1 students to start practicing JS Syntax to do similar things to what they've been doing in Ruby. They will do this lesson as an activity during Week 6. Each section has a corresponding repl that lets them walk through practice exercises

What questions do you have/what do you want feedback on? (optional)

I'd like to ask @margdaly and/or @AlecKap to review this PR if possible by actually working through this lesson and each of the repls. Then provide feedback on the following:

• Does anything seem to be missing from the lesson plan itself? I provided brief explanations for each section but wondering if they need more/less?
• Does each repl make sense? Or there typos? Confusing instructions? Missing info? Lines that should be commented out but aren't? Etc
• How hard did this feel? Were you able to have fun with it or did it stress you out?
• How long does each section and the total lesson take you?
• Are there any repls that need to be pared down for time/simplicity?

  • All the explanations were great and felt like no info was missing

• Does each repl make sense? Or there typos? Confusing instructions? Missing info? Lines that should be commented out but aren't? Etc Each one makes sense, however some had some typos:

  • Data Types suggestions:

    • ln 2 "its" => it's
    • ln 22-24 potato instructions were a bit confusing
    • ln 134 extra space between 'sophisticated' and '${mystical creature}'

    • Functions:

      • ln 1 "Lets" => Let's
      • ln 69 "funciton" => function
      • ln 90 "take" => takes
      • ln 125 "lenght" => length

    • Arrays:

    • ln 5, ln 70, ln 91 'suprise' => surprise

    • ln 134 switched treat to chicken from tuna but ln 146 asks "6g. Print only the string of tuna to the console" - but tuna no longer exists

  • Objects:

    • ln 137, ln 151, ln 185 change 'suprise' => surprise
    • ln 145 motorcyle => motorcycle

• How hard did this feel? Were you able to have fun with it or did it stress you out?

  • the exercises themselves were not necessarily overly challenging, rather started to feel overly redundant. In data types replit part 3, typing out num1, num2 on repeat felt repetitive. Consider having them pre-typed and commented out and have the student uncomment to check the result.
  • the shorter the exercises the more fun I had with it. The conditionals, objects, and loops were my favorite in part bc they were manageable to complete within 30mins and didn't feel repetitive.
  • again, it was not too stressful but did give anxiety about how long it was taking.

• How long does each section and the total lesson take you?

  • We did find it took a lot longer than anticipated. For example 'Data types/Variables', 'Functions ', and 'loops' each took us between 1-2 hours. Where as the 'Object', 'Arrays', and 'Conditionals' took only 30mins to complete. With that said we really like your idea about potentially shortening the exercises and creating additional replits for each topic that they can work on over intermission.

  • Data types, functions, and maybe even loops could have content abstracted to additional replits.
