TKLBAM support for basic backup on non-Debian Linux and even Windows? #1174

We're recently had a question via support on whether or not TKLBAM supports Windows. Bottom line is that currently TKLBAM only supports Debian and Debian derivative OS (i.e. Linux distros that use apt package management).

However, it shouldn't be too hard to support file backup on other Linux OS. And (at least in theory) Windows file support too.

It's not currently a huge priority (hence the wishlist tag), but should be worthy of consideration.

TKLBAM currently requires some TurnKey-specific deps.

Yes...

FWIW, I did a quick bit of googling after I posted this and whilst on face value it seems ok, scratching below the surface, it seems like a ton of work!

It appears that there isn't a Windows port of Duplicity we'd have to install cygwin, then duplicty on that, etc, etc... Perhaps an easier path would be to somehow leverage WSL?

Regardless, it's purely a wishlist item (with no milestone) for now...

FWIW I spoke about this briefly with both Alon & Stefan yesterday.

@OnGle was pretty sceptical that it would get any traction. Although I'll let him raise his specific concerns/thoughts himself when he gets a chance.

Alon was also essentially sceptical, although did suggest that leveraging WSL for a MVP/PoC might be worth a try at some point (when we don't have so much on our plates). So long as we can determine it's popularity, then it could be an interesting experiment to test the waters? Although I imagine that only the most committed (and possibly even just those already using WSL) would bother. Anyway, worth keeping here as a "wishlist" item IMO.
