An stupid idea, but an idea regardless and while I guess that this might be the wrong place and Matrix the wrong protocol, I think the world needs federated Facebook groups without Facebook or self-hosting.

TravisR: goal, to have a federated platform for non realtime communications separated to posts (text/video/image/whatever) and comments under them. Also notifying the members about them if they are subscribed the posts. Also events for the group and notifications about them approaching etc.

I imagine it would be a entirely new client and label hard if not impossible. If I am not managing to explain it, does the linked article explain it?

As mentioned, this is probably best as a new client that focuses more on content and quality rather than trying to drag people into the conversation. I think it'd be best to have this be backed by matrix for interoperability: someone who wants the real time feel can still interact with the community.
