A prime use-case is the "Joe Job" spam that floods into native Matrix rooms from manually bridging to IRC. Typically in such a case, a Moderator would want to redact every message from the spammer. In less severe cases, a time range could be specified, such as when an otherwise good netizen shows extremely poor judgement briefly. This might eventually rolled into the spec'. It seems Discord™ has something like this in it's spec' or UX:
