I am still waiting for a solution to this problem. The backup is totally
useless until this issue gets addressed.

This is the error I get every time I try to stat my back up:
GMail Backup revision 691 (2009-02-20)
Starting backup of account lenstaley@gmail.com into F:\Len's
Office\GmailBackup\2014\Jan-Feb
Error: IMAP: [ALERT] Please log in via your web browser:

Same issue for me.
I wonder if my credentials was OK but when I intentionally entered wrong
credentials, the error message was significantly different. So, my credentials
are OK but I still got the same error message, like other guys :
http://support.google.com/mail/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=78754 (Failure)
Any help / fix would be appreciated
Cheers

Ok, this is not a gmail-backup issue. The error message is due to google
security policy. To be able to login from another application than gmail, you
must make your google account less secured, at least during the backup ;).
Have a look to your account security page :
https://www.google.com/settings/security and clic on the settings button in
front of "Access for less secure apps", then Enable the radio button. Et voila
;) you can now login from the gmail-backup application and so, backup your
mails
