This is going to be a hardware question, so I'll take it on for now. The intent is that HDHomeRuns will do the trick but the only cable card varieties I've seen can only be bought used.
cc @traceypooh have you seen any good hardware alternatives?
oh, geez! sorry i never replied...
no, have only had good luck w/ hdhomeruns -- and yah, they've kind of vanished from site, keeps showing up as "in dev" or "coming soon" (like now https://www.silicondust.com/product/hdhomerun-prime/ ) so yah, seems like used is way to go fo now.
i previously heard some decent thoughts on hauppage (IIRC the esteemed peninsula university was using them - though think that could have been pre-cablecard required and USB small tuners).
looking just now, noticed they... have US cable card receivers now? [blink]

those could be highly interesting! i dont see an actual buy button the on the triple, but the double has one that adds to cart for $99

HDHomeRun will work for over-the-air broadcasts and non-protected cable channels. But what's our story for protected cable channels?

We should look at the available options for this and maybe have suggested hardware and an ingestion engine to interface with it.
Describe alternatives you've considered
Wait for a cable-card HDHomeRun? Rely on Dan's MIT hookup continuing to function?
