mplayer will not play .avi #17

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. attempt to open a .avi file
2. mplayer will automatically search for plugins
3. none will be found; only audio will play

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
audio and video should play, instead only audio plays

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
newest version of mplayer (totem is also installed) Ubuntu 10.04 x64

Please provide any additional information below.
I cannot find any information to get these to work and it's driving me
crazy. I've been running Ubuntu for years and have set it up on many
machines and have always been able to get support for .avi files no
problem! My desktop computer is compatible with them. When mplayer searches
for the plugins it simply returns: No packages with the requested plugins
found.

I have done:
w64codecs
mencoder
medibuntu repositories
gstreamer plugins
updated mplayer
gotten the ubuntu restricted drivers
looked ALL over the Internet and tried just about any fix I could find. I
even installed the DivX SDK because some site said that might get it to work.

** It is worth noting that I did install VLC and the videos will play
correctly with that, although I personally prefer mplayer by far over VLC,
as well as want to figure out why something simple won't work.

***I'm also aware this isn't so much a Vaio issue, although, as previously
stated, I've tried just about everything else I could possibly find on the
Internet and have used Ubuntu for a long time and still cannot find a
solution. Any help is welcome!

Hi xxBartonxx,

I am using lucid 64bit with 2.6.32-22-generic and I have no issue to read .avi
files.
Did you try to reinstall your Operating System?
The only files I can't read with MPLAYER are the wmvhd (hd wmv). And the
solution
came from http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305181, with some
lib
files to remove from the big list if you want to install on lucid.

Hi,
there is very usefull script for lucid (called ubuntu-10.4-start).
Using that script you can easily install required codecs and other usefull
things.
Links describing that script and location from where you can download that
usefull
script:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ubuntu+10.04+Start+script?content=123391

or

http://www.webupd8.org/2010/04/what-to-do-after-fresh-ubuntu-install.html

Small additional note:

I was lately using smplayer (which can be also installed easily using that
script) to
play HD content, where I was using VDPAU nvidia acceleration (using the CUDA
api on
your nvidia). If you have installed nvidia driver and libvdpau (you can find
both in
synaptic), then you can easily select in smplayer VDPAU video output. VDPAU is
not
used to encode all codecs, only those that require bigger amount of processing.
But
it works perfectly :)

Well I ran the scrip roman.murar posted (that's a pretty cool thing btw) and...
no
success. I think the problem is with mplayer, since VLC worked previously, and
smplayer works now. Although it might be being a bit picky, I really wish I
could get
mplayer to work with the .avi files, although I'm happy I can get them to play.
(still not a fan of VLC, although smplayer doesn't seem bad). Anyway, thanks
for the
help! I have no clue what the issue could be, especially since I've completely
removed and reinstalled mplayer.

I was a bit hesitant to post this in the first place since it seems like such a
noobish question, but for the life of me I still can't figure out why mplayer
doesn't
want to play my .avi files (and yet mplayer on my 32bit desktop PC has no
problem
with it). Oh well.

This is not a support forum for general linux issues. This is for Vaio F series
specific problems. Take your questions to the Ubuntu forums.
