[Info] Ubuntu 11.04 on Sony Vaio F #49

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

Not an issue, just an information topic to everyone interested.

Does Ubuntu 11.04 beta work well on our Sony Vaio laptops? Even via upgrade or
scratch installation?

Anything to configure manually, like X or sound or whatever else?

Thanks in advance to beta pioneers ;-)

I've got VPCF11M1E and I had to manually install correct video drivers for my
330M, also manually set up brightness controls and play a bit with CPU scaling
profiles.

I wish there was a configuration options for CPU in Power Management. NV330M
can pick a power profile using X-config panel (like adaptive or performance),
why can't we do it for the CPU?

I have VPCF12YFX/B. I have some problems when KDM starts - sometimes it just
hung up (couple reboot or safe more + startx and it load correct).
Also, I wanna ask, how you played with CPU scaling profiles? Because my fun
very loud all the time, and I wanna know how I can make it quietly?

I've upgraded my ubuntu today, installing from scratch (my home directory is on
another partition). Everything seems to works pretty fine, I had to add
xorg.conf with:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
    Option "EnableACPIBrightnessHotkeys" "false"
EndSection

to make fully work backlight. No other big issue.

Just for annotation, I use ubuntu classic with gnome, unity it seems to me very
immature.

@sandfighter

Which packages did you install in order to make nvidia 330M working?

Tnx.

Updated my 10.10 to 11.04 on a VPCF12Z1E. No Problems right now. All my
Software/Programs running. Nvidia is ok.
For Nvidia I use the Nvidia Package provided by Ubuntu (nvidia-current).

I have a Sony Vaio VPCF11S1E/B running Ubuntu 11.04 (final release). I have
everything working except the touchpad (which I don't use anyway). If you
connect to your wifi at the very start of the installation. The only real
annoyance I have is the wifi is actually running slower. When I put my 10.10
HDD back in, I get the full 30Mb from my wifi connection. I also get 30Mb if
running speedtest from a Windows machine or a Mac. I consistently get 20Mb from
11.04.

My laptop is the Vaio VPCF11JFX. I've been using the official 11.04 release for
about 3 weeks. Just like people above, the touchpad did not have vertical
scrolling at first, no biggy.
There is one problem that I am not sure anyone else is having, I think it might
be a kernel thing, but my grub screen no longer detects my graphics card's full
resolution of 1920x1080 when I type in vbeinfo, it's now a weird 1600x1200. I
am not sure if it's related, but probably, using ctrl+alt+F1 through F6 takes
me to a black screen instead of to the command line tty thing. Everything was
fine before on 10.10

I also feel like my wifi is considerably slower after the upgrade, I guess I
didn't make the connection.

Hey kovacs, have you tried using the guide from this link
http://code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux/issues/detail?id=10#c29 ?
It fixed it for me.

Installing 11.04 on my VPC F126FM has solved my 330m driver issue.
After installing, upgrading/using additional hardware drivers worked like a
charm :D

Installed 11.04 for some time now .. No issues with graphics or sound or mic ..
However the multi-touch feature doesn't work for the touch pad .. wished that
could have been sorted out easily .. :(
