I solved this problem by manually installing the compat-wireless drivers...

I confirm that installing the package
linux-backports-modules-wireless-karmic-generic
solves the wifi problem.
Kernel 2.6.31-20-generic

Using 2.6.33 kernel here, I'll just note that the iwlwifi firmware is needed; in
Debian, package firmware-iwlwifi. Nothing really unusual, and the kernel does
advise
of this when the driver loads.

I installed openSUSE 11.2 (kernel 2.6.31) on VAIO VPCF11C5E
WiFi doesn't work at all ... I tried to install compat-wireless drivers ..
However,
after that I still could't connect to wireless networks.
The network manager icon appers nicely, it also gives me the possibility to
connect
to a wireless network. However, as soon as I enter a SSID and a WPA key, and
press
connect, it does not do anything.
Could somebody post a step-by-step guide on how to fix the wifi ?
Apgrading the kernel might be an option but I would prefer without it.
Thanks
Vlad
