Is there a possibility to have the previous style of the navbar dropdown? Personally, I like more the previous one (the one in black) because it's easy to get confused when the background of the page is white as well.
It would be great to have it as a less variable and customize it.
We're going to stick with just white dropdowns for now I think.
Contrast isn't a huge issue—look at Windows and OS X for examples of light dropdowns on (mostly) light backgrounds with apps like Explorer and Finder.
Readability is a huge issue for us, especially with something like typeahead where we need the extra contrast for showing matching strings as you type.
Consistency and flexibility in styles without extra overhead is key here. Adding both styles would bloat our code and require a lot of custom work for any content that could appear there.
