MMA area stat is incorrect #95

As I was reviewing some statistics for Tricia’s report card yesterday, I came across an issue on the CaribNode regarding a statistic we are reporting. On the main regional page under “Marine Managed Areas”, we report out the number and area of both designated and proposed areas. The issue is with the area stat. This seems to be calculated by the website by taking the “AREA_SQKM” field of the “PA” dataset and summing up the values for each the designated and proposed “On_Water” areas. The issue is that several of these areas have boundaries that overlap. This means that simply summing these values counts several areas of ocean twice or more, giving us an inflated “protected ocean” stat. This same issue exists on each of the country pages under the same section.

Would it be possible to sum the values from the “ABS_A_DES” and “ABS_A_PROP” fields of the “eez_noland” layer for these statistics? Then for the national pages, you wouldn’t need to sum, just take that countries value from those same fields. These values were calculated from a dissolved layer that first looks at designated waters followed by new area of proposed waters (no overlap of boundaries). Let me know if you have questions or need to talk about this more. Thanks!

From Lynn: Tim, I was also double checking some numbers on the CaribNode and saw that several of the country pages now have the right MMA area of ocean protected for both designated and proposed MMA’s. The only ones that looked wrong still was Antigua and Barbuda and the regional page. I’m sure those are still on your to-do list so no worries, just thought I’d mention it.
