This reverts commit e4257e2875a57401e46868fb2f80770e7f07073d, reversing changes made to c27a66149b7483fe42e2ec6aad61d5c3fffe522d.

I'm suggesting to revert this PR because it's causing an elevated number of crashes in production for our app, I posted more details about it here.
