The syntax highlighting currently shows variables as purple in markup mode and math mode, but white in code mode. It would be more consistent if they were purple in all three modes.
Use Case
It can be challenging to pick out variables in code mode, because they have the same color as punctuation, markup text, and function keys. It's especially an issue when I'm looking for a particular variable in a mix of code mode and markup mode, because I don't know whether it will appear purple or white.
