Replicated code between remove and query #36

Merge and eliminate the remove_l versions and refactor/generalize the code.

@tzcoolman , thanks for that, although the remove_l versions should go away as well, IMHO.

@brainstorm I know... I will keep doing that. It is not finished yet...
