Wireless configuration page fails to set channel for mac80211

Steps to reproduce:
1. Use web interface to configure the wireless settings
2. Save and then Apply the changes
3. Observe that clients cannot see the wireless network. 

Expected output: valid /etc/config/wireless file
Observed output: /etc/config/wireless lacks a channel setting; this causes 
the wireless subsystem to fail.

Version info:
Firmware   OpenWrt Kamikaze - With X-Wrt Extensions 8.09 
Kernel     Linux 2.6.25.17 #2 Fri Nov 7 02:51:51 CST 2008 
MAC        00:13:10:46:BD:F6  
Device     Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL
