What's the status of Baka MPlayer and Mochi Player? #259

Open RudraSaga opened 7 years ago

RudraSaga commented 7 years ago

According to issue #196, it seems like Mochi Player is supposed to be the reincarnated version of Baka player but it doesn't seem like there have been a lot of updates to either project. So which one are we supposed to use and are either of them in active development?

We're working on mochi player at the moment which is intended to replace baka. Slowly moving again, you should see a burst of activity in the coming weeks. Mochi player fundamentally works, but there are a number of UI glitches we're working out. All the issues in baka marked with the WIP label either have already been fixed or will be fixed by mochi's first release. As to when that will be, we can't be certain but we would also prefer sooner rather than later, so we're looking for all the time we can find.

Is there a plan to have binaries/releases for Mochi player? It sounds like we should be using Mochi player going forward.

u8sand commented 7 years ago

At the moment it really isn't ready to be released, when it is, binaries will be distributed and everyone using baka will be notified through the baka site, GitHub, and perhaps even a baka update which replaces baka with mochi. Surely in the near future we will be using mochi player going forwards but at the moment, baka is the one that works best (despite some features that mochi has that baka doesn't). If you wish to use mochi despite that fact, mochi can be built. I have a working list of things I know don't work because I haven't gotten to them. Perhaps this weekend I'll publish that list and an intended timeline.

I am generally in favor of upgrading stuff that is no longer up-to-date and/or being maintained, so this has my vote. But perhaps make it an option that users can choose, as some people might not like having the upgrade forced on them. Or maybe have a deprecation warning in a release followed by another release that actually does the upgrade.

Perhaps this weekend I'll publish that list and an intended timeline.

That would be great. Thanks!

While I don't have a timeline yet, I can tell you that there really isn't an overwhelming amount to be done. Many of the Major TODO parts are done and just need testing and the Minor TODO things might take from a few minutes to an hour.

It is 9 months since the last time anyone posted in this thread and I would like to know if there has been progress on either Baka MPlayer or Mochi Player since then (just curious). It would be nice if Mochi Player came out one of these days, but I have no idea what the status is with that, which is why I am asking.

Also, since other people reading this thread about Baka MPlayer and its offshoot Mochi Player might like to know about other offshoots, there is now a fork of Baka MPlayer called Sugoi Player over at https://github.com/wangwenx190/Sugoi-Player being actively developed, although it could use more people testing it out. It started development only a month and a half ago, on February 14, 2018, quite a new project. The developer is Chinese so you can give him feedback not just in English but Chinese too. Currently it is only being tested on Windows and not other platforms, maybe somebody could help him out with other platforms.

Anyway I will be watching to see what happens with Mochi Player, Sugoi Player, and maybe even the original Baka MPlayer. (I actually suggested the name Sugoi Player to the developer of Sugoi Player, originally he used a placeholder name SPlayer but this is the name of another media player. I figured Sugoi went in with the Romaji-name theme of Baka MPlayer and Mochi Player, plus there is also another mpv frontend called Kawaii-Player, and since he originally called it SPlayer I thought of a Japanese word spelled with S in Romaji, I picked Sugoi, first word to pop into my head, some English synonyms of it are “awesome, amazing, great, wonderful, terrific, super”. I figured if his media player was a fork of Baka MPlayer, having it follow the same theme for its name would be a good way to pay tribute and show the connection between the software, the same way Mochi Player follows that theme with its name.)

Also it seems there is an issue over on Mochi Player asking about this too, it seems development is stalled due to other projects being a higher priority for now, but it could start again at any time: https://github.com/mochi-player/mochi-player/issues/4 I posted a comment in that issue thread too, since someone asked about other mpv front-ends, I list a bunch of mpv front-ends there, basically all of them, and give some advice on which ones to use.

Baemir commented 6 years ago

Looks like Sugoi Player's been abandoned as well? A shame, but I didn't have high hopes for it anyway. I have fond memories of using Baka-MPlayer and it saddens me that the developers don't seem to be working on anything new.

u8sand commented 6 years ago

Honestly, towards the end of Baka-MPlayer, we were seeking more help from community members. I'd gladly help continue the project but neither me nor godly-devotion have the time we used to have to devote to this project. I still use baka-mplayer for all of my media player watching needs, is it perfect? no, but it frankly does what I need it to do.

We had plenty of other stuff in the works but its been on hiatus for a while. I'd gladly fire this project up again if I had a few more developers to help out.

So, what is the current status? There were a few commits in this repository from the time of the last response here. Is Mochi still supposed to replace Baka? What about a new release of Baka after six years?

u8sand commented 2 years ago

@RDKRACZ My previous comment still holds. The main reason we've not had a formal release is because we'd want to release for Windows & Linux, but I've personally been unable to get this project compiling for Windows for some time and lack dedicated bandwidth to do so; I install baka off the AUR, building against the main branch and it works for me.

If someone is interested in helping out, in particular by documenting an up to date working toolchain for cross-compilation to windows, I'll gladly make a new release ensuring baka still operates using the latest version of mpv & Qt.
