This is a bit strange to describe. The issue is that if you specify a "source" as extended metadata in CKAN, as happens automatically if you create a new record and specify "URL" and link directly to an image that isn't in our domain (by specifying Source), it gets wired up properly and you see a display; if you instead link to an image by specifying Source, it looks like it gets mangled with path/to/wherever/some-image.png/preview.png which is wrong.
