IDEA: Refer user to timeline on About page. A couple options here --
Add a caption to the chart that explains that coarser data are from whaling ships, etc. and are not as precise as more recent satellite data, so if one is viewing sea ice further back in time, the layers may "look the same." This may not be obvious to all users and it could be very helpful to just note "By the way ... here's the deal" <--- written more gracefully than this, but you get the idea
and/or
Something similar and short could be added to the sidebar that says the same thing in a 'caveat emptor' sort of way -- if you're going to view older data, expect the precision to be lower than more recent data, quit whining" <---more elegant than this! :-)
