Edge swiping with a device case on #1353

As neat a gimmick as edge swiping is, it doesn't work for me on my Nexus 5...... due to the phone case. Never mind the reasons why, I never use a naked phone. Curiously enough, neither do nearly all of the other developers that I know. Thus, this edge swiping is currently sitting at reason no.1 (of 5) for why I haven't moved my sim card to the Nexus 5 yet (which I installed Ubuntu on three months ago).

Particularly, left and right edge swiping are the only trouble for me right now and could use a replacement command. Alternatively, perhaps being able to adjust swipe-zone size might solve this.

I can't say I have any great ideas for alternative commands or interfaces yet, but the option to divide the bottom edge into three swipe zones (25/50/25 for left/bottom/right, or such) could be a quick workaround for most (all?) phone cases for now.

I had the same problem (Nexus 5) - can't swipe with case on. I solved it by adjusting the edge sensitivity using the UT Tweak Tool - available in appstore

Oh, snap!, thanks for the hint. Yes, UI Tweak Tool does fix the swipe troubles. It also solved no.3 on my list: scaling (but wish it helped me switch to a heavier font too). I find it ironic that the tool that allows you to scale the interface doesn't respond well to scaling. But, hey, it's open source and I love it! Solving 1 and 3 on my list just might be enough to finally get me off my beyond-support Windows 10 phone (speaking of... I wish Microsoft would release the source code to all the Lumia drivers so we can load UT on these).

So, now, I recommend that the UI Tweak Tool (or some of its functionality) be included in the default install. Apparently, my internet search skills failed me here... and I totally failed to root around in the app store enough.

I might close this feature request now but, personally, I suspect that if given the option, I would always choose to sacrifice some screen space to a command bar versus using edge swipes. But, okay, I'll try swipes for a while and see where it goes. I am particularly missing having a universal back button (store, settings, browser, etc.).

Thanks again for the great work everybody! 😁

UT Tweak Tool has root permissions. So they are re-tooling it, so to speak, to be less dangerous and put its functions in system settings. As of now, you can bork your install pretty easy if you play with it too much. So be careful about that.

Unfortunately Microsoft is bad about that - locked bootloader's and not sharing drivers. But, there are several really nice phones in the official builds and more in the community builds that you might want to look at. The One Plus phones are really nice. And a new version of Halium which should make even more devices UTouch ready. And then there is the PinePhone and Pinetab which are pure Linux

+1 for ut tweak tool, though closing the "app drawer" is still an issue with a case as theres no setting for that.

On OTA-11 and earlier, the "app drawer" doesn't close. It always remains as an open "card" on your desktop. There's been plenty of discussion of making it closable by swiping, but I'm not sure of the status of that. It's in the forums if you wish to add your vote for that. I am one in favor of it.
