Indicator-network doesn't reflect the connection status and throws "Network error" in browser and other apps #68

OPO on legacy r17.

Sometimes when I leave my home wifi and go out, I can still notice the "no network" icon after 15 minutes or more even though the mobile data shows as 4G (see attached screenshot).

In some form or another, this has been an issue on every UT phone I have owned (Nexus 4 several years back, Bq Aquaris E4.5 and Meizu Pro 5). The problem is that apps on the phone seems to query the network indicator about the connection status, not checking if the device is actually connected or not, and therefore throwing the "Network error" in any app that needs an internet connection.

These two bug reports in launchpad describes the problem, which appears to be present also in the UBports images. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-network/+bug/1616809 https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1609324

This happens to me a lot on MX4 when running in a subway (where there is no network in the tunnels). The indicator and all apps say the device is not connected while if I open up the Network menu there is something like Edge or HSDPA - at least when I am in a station. It takes another several seconds up to several minutes for the icon to appear in the top bar as well and I don't have to tell you that it is rare for the device to start working before the train leaves a station and goes to another tunnel.

I observed this also at my Fairphone 2.

Yeah, it seems to be a little wonky on all devices...

I experience both Launchpad bugs mentioned in this bug report. Especially in the last comment for the second one is describing the issues I experience with my Pro 5 - I have expressed some of them in #155.

Any updates on this very, very annoying bug? I had 2 Pro 5 phones, both had the same issue. Network data indicator jumps like crazy from 4g to h to 3g to E and back. While doing this, and browsing the net, the phone overheats and repeatedly breaking connection to the internet, what makes it work it harder and therefore overheats/draining the battery. Wifi is just fine, no issues there. Completely wiped the phones, reinstalled all again, even changed the mobile provider, the same behaviour is here again. This issue started after Canonical Ota-12 and has been here ever since.

@Stefano0101 Sorry, no, not yet. :/ Issues like this are not very straightforward to debug...

This is possibly still present in Xenial ... but for some reason it hasn't been so annoying for me yet. It may take a couple of second but I haven't experienced any long delays for the indicator to catch up with the actual network status. It is true I haven't been using Xenial so extensively in real life yet - two weeks of usage are not enough to experience all possible cases - but so far this seems to work much better than on Vivid.
