Prepping for upcoming offering #59

In preparation for the upcoming course offering this PR pushes some old updates @eswan18 made during last offering and also makes minor modifications to dates and dependencies. Also adds in the Makefile to produce slides as we used in the advanced course.

Looks good to me – the only thing to note is that the course dates are incorrect.

Actually, these dates are correct. I am teaching a one-off offering of this course during these dates to a company that Larry contracted with. Then, we teach it again Mar 9-18.
