The return expert opinion layer option in the Add or Modify Data tool fails when a species feature layer is also in the map. The EO layer works when other EO layers are in mxd (side note: is it possible to have a better name than layer_q0?), but breaks when an extant range or observation layer is also in the map document.
In terms of workflow for editing species ranges this is an annoying issue. Usually, I'd generate the species unlimited map, drag all of the feature layers for the observation types into editing.mxd and then return the EO layer when changes were made.
