How is spatial statistics different from mapping?

inference from sample to population
- estimate values in unknown areas
- If data represents a sample of people within a cell, then estimate quantities for all people in the cell
- quantify the uncertainty of estimates

Data structures can be unique:
- areal data is aggregated to spatial cells
- point patterns: the location of an event is the data
spatial data isn't independent
- nearby locations are more alike than distance locations
