Stimulus position and experimental design question #1

Hi,

Thank you for providing such an interesting paper! I have a question related to the two experiments mentioned in the paper. As for the first experiment, there is a stimulus central bar which will give a hint with 87.5% accuracy. However, for the second experiment, the stimulus bar has disappeared. I am not sure what is the goal of setting such a stimulus in the experiment. If necessary with a reason, why not just set the stimulus on both experiments?

In addition, for the second experiment, what is the purpose of picking the target horizontal or vertical instead of pick which one if the horizontal (or vertical) one? Or the experiment is just designed that way?

Thanks.

In the first study, the bar told subjects where to attend, and we determined that we could track their internal attention. In the second study, the subject's attention was allowed to roam freely around the display as they searched for a specific target...we were interested in whether we could track the latency with which they found the target. We could!
