Validity of online lab experiments

In the article you distinguish between online field experiments and online lab experiments, stating that lab experiments must simulate the environment they wish to study while field experiments are built into an already existing environment. Since you're presenting about field experiments I assume that you consider that method to be superior, but are there cases in which an online lab experiment may actually be a more theoretically sound choice?
