see failing test TestSpottedStar1D.test_one_spot for (lat=30, lon=0, rspot=0.2). <<<--->>>. (dspot = 0.5, rspot=1)

resolution issue?

or is it not the same assumption in both cases (ellipses versus non ellipses)

We clearly have a difference of how spots are defined in 1D or 2D, in particular see their radius here for very large spots:
