This Pull Request resolves part of Issue #437 . This is also a slight deviation from the usual Git-Flow strategy, superseding PR 481 due to doing a somewhat-"Back-in-time" release.
Note that to isolate effects of adding versioning, the Feature-Issue-437-0.9.1 branch was started at the beginning of develop after the 0.9.0 release. So, this PR needs to be handled in the order of the coordination checklist.
