As originally conceived, the locking of the Excel file was intended to mitigate confusion for formulas breaking when modified, but this then requires that the user use the form perfectly the first time, or understand the process of reusing a metadata template to add more columns, in which case the entered data is lost and users have to re-enter.
Based feedback, I'm thinking we should add a 'bypass' option that lets you and other more-advanced users benefit from the templates and organization that the tool provides without restricting your ability to use the spreadsheet effectively. I'll add this to our github as a feature request for the next phase of improvements we hope to make in late spring or early summer.
