Concept class #56

UCSB is currently using a super simple class for local authorities containing a type (topic) and a label.

Chrissy Rissmeyer Sep 1, 2017 I am super on-board with all of three of these classes (concept, agent, and place) if we can find out a way to reduce the label maintenance burden. UCSB does not have the resources to maintain local labels for all authorities, and would really like to figure out a technical solution that would allow for automatic updating of exact matches (perhaps with some kind of override for those we want to maintain locally? or maybe differing behavior based on predicate used?)

Matthew Critchlow Sep 6, 2017 I think I get your concerns/use case here. so basically you want to generally use the upstream labels for linked records, but have the ability to flag/override certain labels that you choose to take on the local responsibility for (and updates wouldn't clobber)? I can imagine something like this, particularly because it lets you choose how much maintenance you're willing to take on. this doesn't feel to me like it conflicts with anything we do, just that at the moment my understanding is we do have more resources for local label review/maintenance. The update mechanism/strategy seems like a good thing to collaborate on.

Chrissy Rissmeyer Sep 6, 2017 Exactly! I am glad we are on the same page.

And we definitely have some use cases (see CEMA and the Chicano Thesaurus) where being able to maintain a local label and also connect it to a LCSH term would reduce the work load on our end and make both the catalogers and curators happy, so win, win!
