Issue migrated from trac ticket # 2106

component: unit definitions | priority: critical | resolution: wontfix

To whom it may concern: On behalf of the Arkansas Surgical Hospital we are requesting assistance from ISO/UCUM. We use Medhost as our EMR and currently our unit of measure tables are incorrect. Per Medhost, they are not able to add a new unit unless ISO approves it. Medhost suggested, we reach out to ISO and request a new UCUM. Medhost did confirm these codes are hard coded in the system. The codes are based on the ISO standards for Unified Code Units of Measure. Medhost did see on the website an area where we could request a new code but at this time SWAB is not an available UoM. Medhost agent reviewed our issue with Tier II and they are recommending we use arbitrary units. I have copied the information below:

We would like to request the following items be added to your UCUM tables. Our EMR system pulls measures from your website and Medhost cannot help us resolve this issue. Is this enhancement request something you can assist us with fairly quickly that will interface back to Medhost?

Gram stain Slide Aerobic Culture Swab Anaerobic Culture Swab Occult Blood Fecal Container Gastro Occult Sterile Container

This was pulled from the ISO website http://unitsofmeasure.org/ucum.html#section-Arbitrary-Units

3.2 ARBITRARY UNITS §24 arbitrary units ■1 Arbitrary or procedure defined units are units whose meaning entirely depends on the measurement procedure (assay). These units have no general meaning in relation with any other unit in the SI. Therefore those arbitrary semantic entities are called arbitrary units, as opposed to proper units. The set of arbitrary units is denoted A, where A ∩ U = {}. ■2 An arbitrary unit has no further definition in the semantic framework of The Unified Code for Units of Measure ■3 Arbitrary units are not “of any specific dimension” and are not “commensurable with” any other unit. Until version 1.6 The Unified Code for Units of Measure has dealt with arbitrary units as dimensionless, but as an effect the semantics of The Unified Code for Units of Measure made all arbitrary units commensurable. Since version 1.7 of The Unified Code for Units of Measure it is no longer possible to convert or compare arbitrary units with any other arbitrary unit. §25 operations on arbitrary units ■1 Any term involving arbitrary units, is itself an arbitrary unit and is not comparable with any other arbitrary unit or term.

§26 definition of arbitrary units ■1 Arbitrary units are marked in the definition tables for unit atoms by a bullet (‘•’) in the column titled “value” and a bullet in the column titled “definition”.

You may want to look at this website as well. This may be the measures your looking for. I did not copy and paste all of them. I don’t know if this is helpful or not.

Comment from Dan Vreeman:

"Swab" is not a computable unit of measure, and thus is not reasonable for addition to UCUM. Please refer to the section "Examples for some Non-Units" for further clarification. Systems wishing to use a UCUM-compatible symbol for this expression could use a curly brace expression, e.g. {swab}.
