Renaming project #101

Closed jcoufal closed 11 years ago

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

Discussion about possible cool names for Converge-UI. Since we want to have it as an independent upstream project, Converge-UI doesn't work that well.

We are also looking for name for our online guide (web where are presented components and related information). Or will it be just .......-web (-guide)?

Essbahn (Twist on Stadtschnellbahn - German for 'fast city train'). Batten (From the "rails" you hang scenery from in theatre) Maglev (High speed magnetic railway) (taken https://twitter.com/MagLev)

(See the theme I'm going for?)

ehelms commented 11 years ago

So.... you want to name it after fruit?

I see what you did there. Any cool words that combine interface, rails, cloud and/or management? I think Maglev has grown on me the most already. Sounds like a villain.

Anyway, Matt's suggestion for Butterfly is nice, we can try to play with this idea a little bit.

@ehelms What about Apple? I think we can rock the world with this name, but I am not sure, if I havn't heard it somewhere else :-/ Seriously, have any suggestions? Pineapple? Or in Czech it is Ananas...?

ehelms commented 11 years ago

Haha, I was totally kidding about fruit, and am terrible at naming things. So far my vote is still for Maglev cause bullet trains that run on magnets are awesome.

@ehelms Thanks to github I can tell that you're replying to emails, but MagLev is out - someone already stole that for another Rails project :(

bmclaughlin commented 11 years ago

What does everyone think about "Discrepancy" as a potential name for the project? I'm looking at it from the angle that we resolve discrepencies. It's memorable, and imo, fun to say.

jtomasek commented 11 years ago

Harmony is what came to my mind right after reading Brian's comment :)

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

@bmclaughlin Thanks, it's great idea to start brainstorming about it. What I feel from the word "Discrepancy" is negative undertone and I wouldn't like to see some negative feelings coming out of that. But we can think about similar ones in more positive way.

@jtomasek I like it! We just need to mess with names and ideas a little bit more, to have something not taken (https://twitter.com/harmony, also harmony.org is taken - I don't suggest to open it - advertisement attack)

andyfitzsuse commented 11 years ago

Damn, I liked maglev

Rapid Mass? Or Mass Rapid?

Singapore has mass rapid transport and hong kong has mass transport rail Both on rails. Both highly efficient both with very effective human delivery and communication design and both on rails

Just throwing it out there

I was thinking and playing with ideas and what I started to like is "mosaic". The impulse came from my love in Antoni Gaudí's works in Barcelona. With set of simple independent pieces he created amazingly beautiful artworks. [1]

In general, mosaic is set of small pieces, which by setting rules and by their composition gives the whole coherent image.

And I think it might match the purpose of our library. By applying rules (CSS, JS) we shape independent pieces of code (HTML elements) and by their composition we get components.

Unfortunately, the word mosaic is taken [2].

So I was playing with this word a little bit and get these two ideas:

What do you think? I started to love it and I also think, that we can do very good job in project branding, because it's really creative term.

ehelms commented 11 years ago

I like the term mosaic, and I did some Googling around and found a few projects and one company with open-source projects by that name. I like the idea of modifying the word a bit to fit our needs but "Mosaicus" keeps making me think of Spartatcus and the movie 300.

I'll toss out (from my use of thesaurus.com):

  • Tessel (for tessellation) +1 I like it
  • Motley (as in we are a motley crew, Jason's dog, and Incongruously mixture) - this one does however move away from the 'harmonious' nature we were going for ~ not against it at all. We can take a silhouette of jasons dog as our logo too. (unless he's a pitbull/bulldog - zygna & mac have dibs)
    • Coherence ~ nah too emotionless, white-room, labcoat-wearing, pseudo-science selling, pretention exhuming, TED speaking weirdo-esque. plus — all the domains will be taken by either oracle (for their coherence product) or things like this http://www.coherence.com/
  • Montage +1 but we are going to get me playing this on every single call http://youtu.be/JU9Uwhjlog8 (not a bad thing folks )
andyfitzsuse commented 11 years ago

I like it

There's some existing stuff like an iphone LDAP client and some australian photographers but nothing that would cause confusion.

ehelms commented 11 years ago

I would like to leave this open until Thursday evening ~8 EST at which time I will craft an email calling for a vote of the proposed names to allow voting to occur Friday across the world and then perform the migration of code to the new organization over the weekend.

Maybe it's not a problem?

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

@ehelms I would wait till the end of the week (included weekend), because the conference just finished and people might want to think about it a little bit. I just read this post, because I didn't have time to visit anything. So what about throwing out ideas till Sunday included and on Monday we can do a summary and start voting.

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

Well, now I see, it's too late, e-mail was already sent. Next time I would leave little bit more days to the deadline, because I wanted to catch up with some ideas (if I'd find some through weekend).

ehelms commented 11 years ago

Sorry about that Jaromir, I had just assumed the slow down in suggestions meant it was a good time to put it to a vote so that I could use the weekend to migrate everything over. Plus, I am waiting to tackle somethings until we get name and the repository moved over. I can table my email until Monday if you would like to weekend to do a little more thought and research on the name. Only two people have expressed votes and they can always re-vote.

@ehelms No Eric, that's no problem. I even don't have any particular ideas I just wanted to try to brainstorm. But I am ok, I can choose from names we came out till now. I also want to close this issue asap, I just wanted to say that for next time we can announce deadlines earlier so people have enough time to catch up. But no problem, we can continue voting on what we have now.

ehelms commented 11 years ago

@jcoufal In hindsight, I was a bit hasty (and sort of forgot how intense conferences can be) and realized that as part of what I wanted to do I would need a longer run way for the migration anyhow. I say brainstorm away over the weekend and if you come up with more, close off my email, add your new found ideas to the list and re-issue early Monday morning your time so that all time zones get an early look at it.

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

Thank you @ehelms, I suggest to open new (last) round of voting with reduced list. We will pick just those names which have at least 1 vote (+ Eric's 2 news ideas).

Everybody who wants to vote, please, write down 3 names from the following list in order of your preference. First name will get 3 pts, second just 2 pts, third just 1 pt. (if you prefer just one name, you can write down just one, it will be considered for 3 pts). I hope we will have winner after all.

Voting deadline is Friday's evening of US time.

(if you find out that any of these is significantly used by other projects, you can edit this post to mark it down - we shouldn't vote for it)

Not sure if I voted for montage but if i did please replace it with inlay or chamfer. No need to be confusing or bleed google juice to something else

Actually we could call convergeui 'Popsiclestack' and I'd still endorse it. Looking forward to the final tally and sudden death round if necessary :-)

I know this borders on being disruptive since the nomination period is closed, but here are my write-in votes: Confluence, Convergence, Alchemy.

Not that these are better than what's been put up - I just don't get the sense that any of us are super pumped about any of the names so far.

jcoufal commented 11 years ago

@jeperry since we have just one valid vote from Andy (we have to cross James's Montage unfortunately), we might add your suggestions as replacement for those we already crossed out. However, Convergence and Confluence are taken, so we can't use it. Anyway Alchemy seems quite okey.

Note: Unfortunately more of suggested names don't have available .org domain. If we decide for name which has occupied domain, we have to find available one for it as well.

So let me introduce our final voting list:

If @andyfitz wants to change his vote, feel free.

andyfitzsuse commented 11 years ago

skottler commented 11 years ago

SQLAlchemy and Alchemy might cause confusion since SQLAlchemy is used pretty widely across Fedora apps and Openstack. Do people think that will be okay or confusing?

n1zyy commented 11 years ago

I hope that our different purposes would prevent any confusion, but if people just referenced both by "Alchemy" it may be potentially confusing. It doesn't bother me personally, but I'm not sure what the best practices are for avoiding confusion.

FWIW, my vote:

  1. Alchemy (I'm easily swayed by peers, I guess) 2.. converge-ui

Dear contributors, I am happy to introduce you new name for our project:

Alchemy

Looking at the voting list, 12 people voted and 8 of them mentioned Alchemy, so I think that in majority we agreed and the result confirms it:

In next few days, we will be managing to make this name change happen, so expect few announcements and shifts.

Many thanks to @jeperry for this idea.

Thank you all for your contribution and I am looking forward to our cooperation to make Alchemy huge :)
